The advanced characteristics of the new transformers can meet the requirements of high frequency and small space power conversion applications. Designed for excellent high volume power density, low loss and superior efficiency, these forward transformers feature a compact, low-height exterior design that provides higher reliability, with superior thermal conductivity and heat dissipation performance.
The introduction of the Bourns planar transformer assembly increases design flexibility and provides efficiency and power density advantages over conventional wire-wound transformer designs due to significantly reduced AC impedance losses. The PLN0xx-ED21 series flat transformers offer output power of 48 W to 70 W with input voltages ranging from 33 to 57 VDC and switching frequencies of 250 kHz. The series features low leakage inductance of 0.29μH to 0.60μH and volt-second capacity of 81.6 (v-µsec), in addition to providing input voltages of 33 V to 57 V, output voltages of 5 V to 12 V at 4 to 14 A output currents, and multiple turn ratios. These features and their compact design make the Bourns PLN0xx-ED21 series planar transformers an ideal power conversion solution for high-density industrial power systems, low-profile switching power supplies, LED lighting applications, battery management systems, PoE applications, and many other forward-excited transformer applications.
Bourns' new line of flat transformers all use standard printed circuit board (PWB) materials for transformer windings and are welded to the SMT heads to create an easy-to-use surface mount component that facilitates assembly. In addition, Bourns Custom Magnetic Product engineers are able to support many modification and customization requests for this series of planar transformers.
